Game Night Games: 60 of the Best, Picked by Group Size, Crowd and Time
By The Rondovo team · Published · Updated · 18 min read
The best game night games are the ones that fit your group size first and your crowd second. For 4 to 8 adults, a team word game such as Codenames or Wavelength is the safest opener. For 10 or more, play Mafia, Fishbowl or a TV party game everyone plays on their own screen. For two, pick a short duel like Jaipur, Patchwork or Drop Four. For families, Uno, Sushi Go and charades work for nearly every age. Below are 60 game night games with player counts, time, what you need and why each one works, plus pickers by group size, crowd, place and time, and a sample three hour lineup.
In short
- Start light, end loud. Open with a game anyone can join mid round, put the long game in the middle, finish with a big group game.
- Player count beats everything. A great 4 player game is a bad game for 9 people. Check the range before you check the reviews.
- Teams carry new players. Codenames, charades and Spy Grid let a shy guest contribute without being on the spot.
- One long game at most. Catan or Ticket to Ride takes an hour; plan the rest of the night around it.
- No kit needed for half of this list. Mafia, Contact, Fishbowl and Two Truths and a Lie need nothing but people and a bit of paper.
How to choose game night games
Four questions settle it in under a minute.
- How many people? This rules out most of the list straight away.
- Who is coming? Board game regulars, a family with a nine year old, a couple, a work crowd who barely know each other.
- Where? Around a table, on the sofa facing a TV, or spread across a video call.
- How long? Twenty minutes before dinner, or a full evening.
The pickers below answer each question. Then the full list gives you the details for all 60 games.
Game night games by group size
| Group size | Best first pick | Also great | Avoid |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 players | Jaipur or Patchwork | Drop Four, Bookends, Love Letter, Azul | Social deduction and team games |
| 3 to 4 | Ticket to Ride | Azul, Sushi Go, Splendor, Prism | Mafia (too few to hide) |
| 5 to 6 | Codenames | Skull, Wavelength, Just One, Coup | 4 player board games |
| 6 to 8 | Telestrations | Wavelength, Decrypto, Odd One Out, Avalon | Catan (caps at 4, or 6 with the extension) |
| 8 to 10 | Herd Mentality | Fishbowl, Monikers, Avalon, Fill-In | Anything with one player taking a long turn |
| 10 to 16 | Mafia | Fishbowl, Spy Grid, Hues and Cues, Scrawl | Card games with one deck |
| 16 and up | Charades in teams | Wink Murder, Most Likely To, a quiz | Anything with individual scoring |
Game night games for 2 players
Two player nights reward head to head games with a little bluff. Jaipur and Patchwork are the classic boxed duels. Love Letter and Azul play beautifully at two even though they go higher. Online or on one sofa with two screens, our Drop Four, Bookends and XOXO are five to ten minute matches. There is a longer list in games for couples and two player online games.
Game night games for 4 people
Four is where most board games are happiest. Most modern classics (Ticket to Ride, Azul, Splendor, Carcassonne, Pandemic) are at their best here. If you only own one board game, make it one that plays well at four.
Game night games for 6 to 8 people
This is where most board games stop and party games start. Codenames, Wavelength, Telestrations, Decrypto and Skull all shine at six to eight. Social deduction starts working too: Avalon needs at least five. See best board games for groups for boxes that seat this many.
Game night games for 10 people or more
At ten, avoid any game where one person takes a long turn while nine wait. Pick games where everyone acts at once (Herd Mentality, Fill-In, Tambola), or team games where the whole team talks (Fishbowl, charades, Spy Grid). Party games for large groups goes deeper on crowds of 15 to 30.
Game night games by crowd
| Crowd | Start with | Main event | Finish with |
|---|---|---|---|
| Adults, new to games | Two Truths and a Lie | Codenames | Fishbowl |
| Adults, board gamers | Skull | Catan or Ticket to Ride | Avalon |
| Friends who know each other well | Most Likely To | Wavelength | Mafia |
| Family with kids 7 and up | Just One | Uno or Sushi Go | Charades |
| Teens | Fill-In | Spy Grid | Mafia |
| Couples (two couples or more) | Herd Mentality | Codenames in couples | Monikers |
| A competitive crowd | Coup | King of Tokyo or Catan | Skull |
Best game night games for adults
Adults want games with room for banter: bluffing, writing funny answers, reading each other. Codenames, Wavelength, Skull, Avalon and Monikers are the reliable ones. For a full adult night with themes and pacing, read game night ideas for adults.
Best game night games for families
Families need short rounds, no reading speed advantage, and no one sidelined. Uno, Sushi Go, Just One, charades and Ludo work from about age seven. Pair this with our family game night ideas.
Game night games for kids and teens
Kids like speed and silliness: Spot It, charades, Pictionary on paper. Teens like anything with secret roles or anonymous funny answers, so Mafia and Fill-In land well. See party games for teens and sleepover games.
Game night games for couples
Couples nights usually mean four to eight people who already know each other, which suits Wavelength, Herd Mentality and Most Likely To. Play Codenames with partners on opposite teams for extra trash talk. More in games for couples.
Game night games by place
At home around a table
Board and card games are built for this. Have one boxed game you know well enough to teach in five minutes, a deck of cards, and paper and pens for Fishbowl or Categories.
Game night games on the TV
A TV turns a room of 8 to 16 into an audience. You have three routes:
- Jackbox Party Packs on a console, PC or streaming stick, with everyone answering on their own phone.
- A browser game cast to the TV from a laptop.
- A site built around a shared screen, such as Rondovo: open rondovo.com/tv in the TV's own browser, add it to the room, and everyone plays on their own screen. There is no app to install.
TV games without a console lists which TVs and sticks work with what.
Online game night games
On a video call, pick games where everyone joins with a link or code and the call carries the talking: Codenames Online, skribbl.io, Gartic Phone, Board Game Arena or a Rondovo room. Avoid anything that needs one person to screen share a fiddly board. In a Rondovo room, everyone picks "Just this screen" and sees the board on their own device, so nobody has to share their screen. Virtual game night ideas has a full plan for remote groups.
Game night ideas without board games
You need nothing but people for Mafia, Contact, Twenty Questions, Wink Murder and charades, and only paper for Fishbowl and Categories. Our games to play with no props has more.
Game night games by time
| Time you have | Play |
|---|---|
| 10 minutes | Contact, Five Letters, Just One (half a game), Love Letter |
| 20 to 30 minutes | Codenames, Skull, Sushi Go, Telestrations, Herd Mentality |
| 45 to 60 minutes | Ticket to Ride, Azul, Avalon, Fishbowl, Wavelength |
| 90 minutes or more | Catan, Pandemic (two games), a full Mafia session |
The 60 best game night games
Player counts are the ranges printed on the standard editions as of October 2026 (expansions and newer editions sometimes change them); times are a typical game with people who know the rules. Where we list a Rondovo game, it is our own take on the idea, free in a browser, and guests need no account.
Party games that need nothing
1. Charades. Any number in two teams · 20 to 40 minutes · slips of paper. The oldest game night game still works because acting badly is the fun part. Write your own prompts or use our charades ideas. Our Act It Out lets the other team pick your word and shows it only on your screen.
2. Fishbowl. 6 to 20 · 30 to 60 minutes · paper and a bowl. Everyone writes names on slips; teams guess the same pile in three rounds: describe freely, one word only, then mime. Round three is where the best laughs of the night come from, because every clue is now a callback.
3. Mafia (or Werewolf). 6 to 16 · 20 to 45 minutes · a moderator and role slips. A hidden few try to outlast the town. It holds a room of 12 better than almost anything, and the full rules and role counts are in how to play Mafia. Our Nightfall runs the night on everyone's own screen, so nobody has to sit out as moderator.
4. Contact. 3 to 12 · 15 minutes · nothing. One player guards a word, revealing a letter at a time, while the others try to sync up on words with the same start. Hard to explain, easy to play after one round.
5. Two Truths and a Lie. 3 to 15 · 15 minutes · nothing. Perfect when half the room has not met. Ideas for statements are in our two truths and a lie guide, and Two Truths keeps score for you.
6. Most Likely To. 4 to 20 · 10 to 20 minutes · a list of prompts. Everyone points at the person a prompt describes. Keep it kind; our most likely to questions are all PG.
7. Wink Murder. 8 to 20 · 10 minutes a round · a deck of cards. The murderer kills with a wink; everyone else tries to catch them before running out of people.
8. Twenty Questions. 2 or more · 5 minutes a round · nothing. A good opener while people are still arriving.
9. Categories. 3 to 10 · 15 minutes · pens and paper. Pick a letter and six categories, write an answer for each in two minutes, score only answers nobody else wrote.
10. Heads up style guessing. 3 to 12 · 10 minutes · a screen held to your forehead. The group describes, the guesser shouts. The Heads Up! app is the well known version; our Face Up is a free browser take.
Boxed party games
11. Codenames. 4 to 8 or more in two teams (two player variants exist) · 15 to 30 minutes. Two spymasters give one word clues to link words on a 5×5 grid. It is the most reliable opener for adults who do not usually play games. Codenames Online is free on the official site. Our Spy Grid is our own one word clue grid; see games like Codenames for more.
12. Wavelength. 2 to 12 · 30 to 45 minutes. One player gets a hidden target on a spectrum ("cold to hot") and gives a clue; the team argues about where it lands. Expect loud arguments about whether a burrito is closer to sandwich or soup. Mindline is our free spectrum game with guesses on everyone's screen.
13. Just One. 3 to 7 · 20 minutes. Cooperative: everyone writes a one word clue for the guesser, but duplicate clues are erased. Gentle, quick, and great with families.
14. Telestrations. 4 to 8 · 30 minutes. Draw, guess, draw, guess around the table, then reveal how "giraffe" became "a broken lamp". Online, Gartic Phone does the same in a browser, and our Chain Sketch replays every book on the TV.
15. Herd Mentality. 4 to 20 · 20 minutes. Answer questions trying to match the majority, not be right. Huge range, ten second rules, a natural fit for a big mixed group.
16. Monikers. 4 to 16 · 30 to 60 minutes. A boxed Fishbowl with funny prewritten cards. Great value if your group likes Fishbowl but not writing slips.
17. Skull. 3 to 6 · 15 to 30 minutes. Each player has flowers and one skull; bid on how many you can flip without hitting a skull. Pure bluffing, five minutes to teach.
18. The Resistance: Avalon. 5 to 10 · 30 minutes. Hidden loyalists and spies send knights on quests. Like Mafia but nobody is eliminated, so everyone plays to the end.
19. Decrypto. 3 to 8 in two teams · 15 to 45 minutes. Teams send coded clues and try to intercept the other team's code. For groups who loved Codenames and want more.
20. Dixit. 3 to 8 in the current edition (older boxes say 3 to 6) · 30 minutes. Give a clue for a dreamlike picture card that some, but not all, will guess. Lovely with mixed ages.
21. Hues and Cues. 3 to 10 · 30 minutes. Give one or two word clues to point people at one colour among 480. Simple and oddly competitive.
22. Fill in the blank answer games. 3 to 12 · 15 minutes. Everyone writes the funniest answer to a prompt and the room votes. Quiplash in the Jackbox packs is the famous version; our Fill-In shows answers anonymously on the TV.
Card games
23. Spoons. 3 to 12 · 15 minutes · a deck and spoons (one fewer than players). Pass cards fast, grab a spoon when anyone gets four of a kind. Loud, physical, beloved by teens.
24. Uno. 2 to 10 · 20 to 30 minutes. Everyone knows it, which is the point. Read games like Uno for variations, or play our Showdown! on separate screens.
25. Exploding Kittens. 2 to 5 · 15 minutes. Draw until someone draws the bomb. Quick, chaotic and kid friendly. Our Nine Lives is our own draw until boom card game for up to 10.
26. Sushi Go. 2 to 5 · 15 minutes. Pick a card, pass the hand. The gentlest way to teach card drafting.
27. Coup. 2 to 6 · 15 minutes. Claim any role you like and dare others to call your bluff. Short enough to play four times in a row.
28. Love Letter. 2 to 6 · 20 minutes. A tiny deck, one card in hand, deduce who holds what. Fits in a pocket.
29. President (Scum). 4 to 8 · 20 minutes · a standard deck. Climbing card game with a social hierarchy that flips every round.
30. Golf. 2 to 4 with one deck, more with two · 20 minutes. Swap cards into your grid to get the lowest score. Our Low Deck is a twelve card version.
31. Hearts. 4 · 30 minutes · a standard deck. Avoid hearts and the queen of spades, or take every one and shoot the moon.
32. Sequence. 2 to 12 in teams · 30 minutes. Play a card, place a chip, make five in a row. See games like Sequence; our AfterMath plays the same family of game.
33. Phase 10. 2 to 6 · 45 to 90 minutes. Rummy with ten set goals; long, but people love it. Games like Phase 10 has faster options, including our Summit.

Where Rondovo fits
Rondovo is our free site of party and board games: one person hosts a room, everyone joins on their own screen with a four letter code, and a TV is optional. It is handy when you do not own the box, when you have more people than a box seats (our party games take up to 16), or when half the group is on a video call.
It is not a replacement for everything above. A table of physical cards, a charades round with no screens at all, or a long Catan game with real wooden pieces each have a feel no browser matches. Mix and match. For the wider picture of every party game we cover, start at party games.
Questions people ask
What are the best game night games for adults?
Codenames, Wavelength, Skull, Avalon, Telestrations and Monikers are the most reliable for adults, because they mix quick rules with plenty of talking. For a big group, add Mafia and Fishbowl.
What are good game night games for large groups?
Pick games where everyone plays at once or the whole team talks: Mafia, Fishbowl, Herd Mentality (up to 20), charades in teams, and TV party games played on everyone's own screen, such as Jackbox or Rondovo, which take up to 16 on our party games.
What games are good for 8 people?
Telestrations, Wavelength, Decrypto, Codenames, Avalon and Herd Mentality all play well at 8. Most four player board games do not.
What games can you play on game night without board games?
Mafia, charades, Contact, Twenty Questions, Wink Murder and Two Truths and a Lie need nothing. Fishbowl and Categories need only paper and pens. Online, browser games such as skribbl.io or a Rondovo room need only a screen each.
What are the best game night games for couples?
For two people, Jaipur, Patchwork and Love Letter. For several couples, Wavelength, Herd Mentality and Codenames with partners on opposite teams.
How many games should you play at a game night?
Three to five in three hours is typical: one or two quick openers, one main game, and a big group finish. Plan one more than you need in case one falls flat.
What can you play on the TV for game night?
Jackbox Party Packs, browser party games cast from a laptop, or a site built for a shared screen such as Rondovo. Jackbox needs a console, PC or streaming device. Browser games need only a TV with a web browser, or a laptop plugged in with an HDMI cable.
