Two Player Online Games: The Best Games for Two, for Friends and Couples, Sorted by Mood (Most Free, No Download)

Drop Four on Rondovo: the shared screen during a game

The best two player online games you can play with a friend or partner, free and with no download, are classic board and card games in a browser: chess on Lichess, tic tac toe and Connect 4 on Papergames, two-player gems like 7 Wonders Duel and Patchwork on Board Game Arena, and quick duels like Bookends, XOXO and Drop Four on Rondovo. Pick by mood: five minutes of banter, a word race, a proper strategy game, a card game, or something cosy at the end of the day.

Below is our list sorted by mood, with what each costs, whether it needs an account, and how long it takes, plus a quick picker for when you cannot decide.

In short

How to choose a two player online game

Three questions narrow it down fast.

Are you in the same room or apart? Apart, you need a game where each of you plays on your own device and a call running alongside. Together, a game on two screens still beats passing one tablet back and forth, because hidden information stays hidden.

Does your friend want to install anything? Most people do not, at least not for a first try. Browser games with a join link win here. Apps are worth it for a game you will play every day, like a word game you keep going for weeks.

How much brain do you have left? After work, a five-minute game you can play while talking is better than a forty-minute strategy game you will both resent. The sections below are sorted with that in mind.

A note on scope: if you both own a console or PC, cooperative video games such as It Takes Two were made for couples. This guide sticks to board, card and word games you can open in a browser or a simple app. For date night ideas beyond screens (question games, games on a walk, games at dinner), see our games for couples guide.

Quick games for two: under 10 minutes

Perfect for a coffee break, a long distance call that needs something to do, or a tiebreaker on who does the dishes.

Papergames.io is the classic choice: tic tac toe, Connect 4, Battleship, Gomoku, checkers, chess and backgammon, free, with guest play and a link you send to your friend. It is supported by ads, with a paid option to remove them.

XOXO is our two-player noughts and crosses, played as a best of three. The interesting part is Ultimate mode: nine small boards, and the square you play sends your rival to the matching small board. It turns a solved children's game into a real one.

Drop Four is our four in a row game: pick a column, the disc falls to the lowest space, first to four in a row wins. The host picks one, three or five rounds and the board size, and who starts swaps every round.

Dotty is dots and boxes with a twist: you roll a die and draw that many lines, so you cannot always avoid giving away a box. Most boxes wins. It plays in about eight minutes with 2 to 4.

Frostmatch is for the competitive couple: you both get the same gem board and race to make matches for 90 seconds, sending ice to your rival's board every 150 points. Then a final decides it.

Word games for two

If you both like words, these are the games that start the best arguments about whether something is a real word.

Words With Friends from Zynga is the long-running crossword tile app. Its strength is that you play one move whenever you have a minute, so a game can run for days. It needs the app and an account.

Bookends is a word race made for exactly two. One of you draws the first letter, the other draws the last, then you both race to type a real word that fits between them. First real word wins the round, with a bonus for every letter past three. A full game is five minutes, and it is very hard to stop at one.

Five Letters is a race on the same five-letter word, with six guesses each and green, yellow and grey clues. Solving in fewer guesses scores more, and the first solver earns a bonus. If you already play the daily puzzle together, see our guide to Wordle with friends.

Wordsmith is our crossword tile game for 2 to 4: seven tiles each, build crossing words, hunt the bonus squares, 50 extra points for using all seven. It is a full evening game, about 45 minutes. Our games like Scrabble guide compares it with the other options.

Strategy games for two

For when you both want to think, and one of you wants to win.

Lichess is a free, open source chess server with no ads, and you can send a friend a link to a game. If one of you is much stronger, play with a time handicap.

Board Game Arena hosts well over a thousand board games in a browser. The two-player standouts are 7 Wonders Duel (build a civilisation in about 30 minutes), Patchwork (a gentle quilt-building puzzle), Hive (an abstract game of bugs with no board), Onitama (a five-minute martial arts chess), Santorini (build and climb towers) and Splendor Duel. You both need an account, and some games or features need a Premium member.

Prism is our gem-trading engine builder for 2 to 4: take chips, buy cards that give permanent discounts, win Patrons, first to 15 prestige. If you know Splendor, you know the shape; our games like Splendor guide covers the differences.

Night Express is our route-building game across a map of the USA for 2 to 5. Collect carriage cards, claim lines and connect your secret routes. With two, the map is open and the game becomes a race; see games like Ticket to Ride for more.

Atlas is our property trading game: buy plots, hold whole districts to double the rent, build, and finish with the highest net worth after the chosen number of laps. With two it is a tense negotiation.

Lost Cities is one of the best two-player card games ever made: you fund expeditions in five colours and each one either pays off or costs you. Hanamikoji is a tiny, clever game of giving your opponent choices. Both are on Board Game Arena, along with cribbage.

Showdown! is our match-the-colour-or-number card game. With two, Flip works like a Block, which makes it quick and swingy. Read how it compares in our UNO guide.

Summit is our ten stage rummy climb, a good weekend game for two who like collecting sets and runs. Our Phase 10 guide explains every stage.

Low Deck gives each of you twelve hidden cards in a grid. Reveal, swap, clear matching columns and finish with the lowest total.

Nine Lives is our draw-until-it-explodes card game. With two it becomes a duel of nerves and counting: each Kaboom left in the deck is aimed straight at the other person. See games like Exploding Kittens.

AfterMath is our five in a row card and board game, one against one with seven cards each. Our Sequence guide has the full rules and jack strategy.

Cosy and cooperative games for couples

Not every couple wants to compete. These are for the evenings when you would rather win together, or just play something gentle.

Sky Team on Board Game Arena is a two-player cooperative game about landing a plane. You roll dice in secret and place them without talking, which is surprisingly romantic and occasionally a crash.

The Crew and Hanabi on Board Game Arena are cooperative card games where you cannot say what is in your hand. Both work with two, and both teach you how your partner thinks.

Ludo is the race game nearly everyone grew up with: roll a six to come out, go round the board, send each other home. With two it is a gentle game you can play while talking about your day. Our guide to how to play Ludo covers the rules and house variations.

Ashta Chamma is the Indian cowrie-shell race game: throw four shells, walk the ring, then turn inward. If one of you grew up with it, teaching it to the other is half the fun.

One gap: Rondovo has no cooperative two-player game yet. Every game here is head to head. If you want to be on the same side, the Board Game Arena co-op games above are the better pick.

Every two-player game on Rondovo

Rondovo has a For two shelf: games that are just as good with two players as with more. As of October 2026 it holds 17 games.

How it works for two: one of you hosts a room and shares the four letter code or link. The other joins at rondovo.com on their own screen: no download, no account. Both of you play on your own screens, and if you are in the same room, a TV can show the board (open rondovo.com/tv on it), though you do not need one. Apart, run a video or voice call alongside; each of you sees the board on your own screen, so nobody shares a screen. The games are free to host and join.

Where Rondovo is weaker: there are no ranked matches against strangers, so if you want to find a random opponent at 2am, Lichess and Board Game Arena are better. And a few games, Wordsmith and Night Express especially, are full evening games rather than quick ones.
