Games Like Scrabble: Where to Play Scrabble Online With Friends Free, Plus the Best Alternatives
By The Rondovo team · Published · Updated · 10 min read
You can play Scrabble online with friends for free on the official site, playscrabble.com, or in the official Scrabble GO app, both free with ads as of October 2026. If you want games like Scrabble instead, Words With Friends and Wordfeud are the closest turn-based apps, the Internet Scrabble Club is the purist's choice for live games, and browser crossword tile games (including our own, Wordsmith) let a group play in one sitting with nothing to install. Which one suits you depends mostly on one question: are you playing slowly over days, or together tonight?
In short
- Official and free: playscrabble.com in a browser, Scrabble GO on mobile. Both support games with friends and against the computer.
- Scrabble belongs to two companies. Hasbro holds it in the US and Canada, Mattel everywhere else, which is why boards, apps and even rules look slightly different by country.
- Closest alternatives: Words With Friends and Wordfeud for slow games by turns, Lexulous and the Internet Scrabble Club in a browser.
- For a game night in one sitting, pick something with a turn timer, so nobody stares at a rack for five minutes.
- The fastest way to score more is learning the two-letter words and playing parallel to words already on the board.
Where can you play Scrabble online with friends for free?
Here is what the official and long-running options offer as of October 2026.
| Option | Where it runs | Cost | With friends | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| playscrabble.com | Browser | Free | Play a Friend, Find a Match, Play the Computer | Official Scrabble with no install |
| Scrabble GO | iOS, Android | Free with ads and in-app purchases | Invite friends, random opponents | Official Scrabble on mobile, many side modes |
| Internet Scrabble Club (isc.ro) | Browser and client | Free, no ads | Live games with friends or strangers | Serious live play with a clock |
| Wordsmith (Rondovo) | Browser, any device | Free | Room code, 2 to 4 players | Playing together in one sitting, TV optional |
The official route is playscrabble.com. Its home page calls itself the official way to play online, offers a quick match, a game against a friend and a game against the computer, and adds daily puzzles. It is run alongside Scrabble GO, the app Scopely launched in 2020 when the Scrabble licence moved there from Electronic Arts. Scrabble GO is free, but it carries ads, coins and reward tracks, and that busyness is the most common complaint about it.
Why Scrabble differs by country
Scrabble has two owners. Hasbro holds the rights in the United States and Canada; Mattel holds them in the rest of the world. Digital versions have handled that split by showing different branding depending on where you are.
It goes beyond logos. In 2024 Mattel released a double-sided board in Europe with a gentler team version called Scrabble Together on the back, which was not planned for North America. And the official word lists differ too: tournaments in North America use the NASPA Word List, while most of the world plays with Collins Scrabble Words, which accepts many more words. If you and a friend in another country argue about a word, you may both be right.
Games like Scrabble: the best alternatives
These are the games people actually move to, grouped by how they play.
Turn-based apps (play over hours or days)
- Words With Friends. Zynga's app, around since 2009, plays on a board with bonus squares like Scrabble but uses its own layout and tile values. Free with ads, with a paid ad-free option. Great with a friend in another time zone; frustrating when they stop answering.
- Wordfeud. The plainest of the big apps: a 15 by 15 board, random or friend opponents and a choice of dictionaries. Free with ads, with a paid upgrade that removes them.
- Lexulous. A long-running browser game with a seven or eight tile rack option. No app needed, though the design shows its age.
Live, in one sitting
- Internet Scrabble Club. Free, no ads, and full of strong players. It is the place to play with a real clock and real tournament rules. Beginners may find the regulars intimidating.
- Crossword tile games in a room. A browser game where one person opens a room and everyone joins with a code fits a game night better than an app built for slow play. Our Wordsmith is one (more on it below).
Different shapes of word game
- Bananagrams has no shared board: everyone races to build their own grid. Fast, loud, and good for more than four people.
- Upwords lets you stack tiles on top of letters already played, so words change as the game goes on.
- Wordle and its cousins are for a quick daily fix rather than a 45 minute game. Our guide to playing Wordle with friends covers the competitive versions.
How Scrabble works, in one minute
Scrabble uses 100 tiles, two of them blanks, and a 15 by 15 board. Everyone draws seven tiles. The first word must cover the centre square, and every later word must join what is already down, reading across or down like a crossword.
You score every word your tiles form, including the short words you make by touching other tiles. Bonus squares double or triple a letter or a whole word, but only on the turn a tile first covers them. Use all seven tiles in one move and you get 50 extra points, a play called a bingo. Instead of playing, you can swap tiles (losing your turn) or pass. When the bag is empty and someone plays out, the game ends and leftover tiles count against their owners.
Scrabble scoring tips that actually move your average
Most casual players score around the same per turn no matter how many words they know. These habits are what change that.
Play alongside words, not only through them. Laying a word alongside another one, letter against letter, creates several two-letter words at once. Each one scores. A five-letter word played parallel can easily outscore a longer word played through a single letter.
Aim heavy letters at bonus squares in two directions. A high-value tile on a letter bonus that forms words both across and down counts twice. A Z or X tucked into a double or triple letter square this way is often worth 40 points or more on its own.
Keep your rack balanced. Two or three vowels with four or five consonants is the sweet spot. Seven consonants or five vowels is a reason to swap, even though it costs a turn. A good swap now beats three weak turns.
Hold on to S and the blank. An S lets you hook a new word onto the end of an existing one and score both. The blank is your best chance at a 50-point bingo. Spend either one only for a big score, not to tidy up your rack.
Learn common bingo letters. Racks built from letters like E, R, S, T, I, N, A and L make seven-letter words far more often than racks with C, V or W. Keep those letters when you swap; throw the clunky ones back.
Watch what you open. A word ending one square from a triple word square hands your opponent a big score. When you are ahead, close lanes. When you are behind, open them.
Have answers ready for Q. Without a U, Q is hard to play. Short words like QAT, QAID and SUQ get it off your rack in most word lists, and QI does too in the official tournament lists.
The two-letter words worth learning
Two-letter words are the cheapest way to play better. They let you squeeze tiles into tight spots, make parallel plays possible, and turn an awkward rack into a decent score. You do not need all of them on day one; learn them in small batches.
Start with the ones carrying heavy letters. JO, XU, KA, ZA and QI are the famous ones because they turn a 10-point or 8-point tile into an easy play. XI and EX are just as useful. QI and ZA are valid in both official tournament lists; some house dictionaries, including the one Wordsmith uses, leave them out.
Then learn them by first letter. Run through the vowels with each consonant (BA, BE, BI, BO, BY) and note which ones are words. It is easier to remember a missing word in a pattern than a long list.
Know that the lists change. The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary added OK and EW in 2018, and Collins has always accepted more short words than the North American list. Agree on a dictionary before the game, or use a game that checks words for you.
A practical tip from running Wordsmith: our word list, ENABLE, has 96 two-letter words. Players who learn even a third of them start making parallel plays within a few turns, and their scores show it.
Wordsmith: our own crossword tile game
Wordsmith is Rondovo's own take on the crossword tile game, built for playing together in one sitting. One person hosts a room, two to four players join on their own screens with a four letter code, and each rack stays private on its owner's screen. Put the board on a TV if you have one (open rondovo.com/tv in its browser); if not, everyone picks "Just this screen" and sees the board and their rack together on their own device, which also works on a video call.
How it differs from Scrabble, honestly:
- Our own board and tiles. Same 15 by 15 shape, but our own bonus layout (Spark doubles a letter, Flame triples it, Anvil doubles a word, Forge triples it, and the centre Hearth doubles the first word) and our own letter values. 100 tiles including two Blanks, and 50 extra points for using all seven.
- Words are checked for you against the public domain ENABLE word list (the 168,000 or so words of 2 to 15 letters). No arguments, no dictionary on the table. If your group prefers to argue, switch to house rules: anything goes, and the others have ten seconds to challenge and vote a play off.
- A turn timer (90 seconds by default, from 60 to 180) and an optional game time limit of 20 to 60 minutes, so the night ends when you want it to.
- Two players short? The host can add a computer player.
Where it is weaker: four players at most, no slow game played over days, no ranked ladder of strangers, and it does not use the official tournament lists, so QI and ZA will not score. If those matter to you, playscrabble.com or the Internet Scrabble Club is the better pick.
Shorter word games for the same night
For a quick round between longer games, Bookends is a two player race: one of you draws a first letter, the other a last letter, and the first to type a real word that fits wins the round. Five Letters puts everyone, up to 16 players, on the same secret word at once. Both use the same word checking as Wordsmith.
Questions people ask
Can I play Scrabble online with friends for free?
Yes. playscrabble.com lets you start a game with a friend in a browser for free, and the Scrabble GO app does the same on mobile with ads. Both also let you play the computer. The Internet Scrabble Club is a free alternative that needs an account.
What is the official Scrabble app?
Scrabble GO, made by Scopely, has been the official app since 2020, when it replaced the Electronic Arts version. playscrabble.com is the official browser version.
What is the closest game to Words With Friends?
Wordfeud is the closest in feel: a 15 by 15 board, bonus squares, games against friends or strangers by turns. Scrabble GO is the closest to real Scrabble rules.
Why is Scrabble different in the UK and the US?
Hasbro owns Scrabble in the US and Canada and Mattel owns it elsewhere, and the two regions use different official word lists. Collins Scrabble Words, used in most countries outside North America, accepts many more words than the NASPA Word List.
Is QI a valid Scrabble word?
Yes, in both official tournament lists. It is one of the most played words in Scrabble because it uses a Q without a U. Some other word games use dictionaries that leave it out, so check before you rely on it.
What are good games like Scrabble for a group?
For more than four people, a race game works better than a turn-based board: Bananagrams in person, or a shared word game like Five Letters where everyone guesses at once. Our word games for groups guide has more. For two to four, Wordsmith or any Scrabble app works well.
