Word Games for Groups: 16 to Play Out Loud, on Paper or Online With Friends
By The Rondovo team · Published · Updated · 8 min read
The best word games for groups need nothing but voices. Contact, Ghost and Categories work for 4 to 12 people with no props at all. With pen and paper, play a letter-based category race. With a box, Codenames and Just One are the easy group picks. And to play word games with friends online, a browser game where everyone types on their own screen keeps it fair and fast.
Below are the rules for each, grouped by what you have to hand, and a picker for different group sizes.
In short
- No props, any size: Contact, Ghost, Twenty Questions, Word Association.
- In pairs or teams: Password, Taboo style describing, Codenames.
- Pen and paper: Categories with a random letter, Word Grid, Telegrams.
- Boxed games: Codenames (best with 4 or more), Just One, Wavelength, Scrabble for smaller groups.
- Online with friends: daily word puzzles, Board Game Arena, or room-code games like our Five Letters and Hush.
Spoken word games for groups (no props)
Contact
The best spoken word game for a clever group, and almost unknown outside it. One player, the Wordmaster, thinks of a word and says its first letter, say "P".
Everyone else tries to get the next letter out of them. A player thinks of any word starting with P and gives a clue to it: "Is it something you pay with?" (they mean "purse"). As more letters come out, every clued word has to start with all of them. If another player thinks they know the answer, they shout "Contact!" and both count down from three and say their word together. If they match, the Wordmaster must reveal the next letter. The Wordmaster can block by saying the word first ("No, it's not purse").
Guessers win when someone guesses the Wordmaster's word. Best with 4 to 8 players.
Ghost
Players take turns adding one letter to a growing string. You must always be heading toward a real word, but you lose the round if you complete a word of four or more letters. Losing earns a letter of G, H, O, S, T; spell GHOST and you are out.
If you think the last player has no real word in mind, challenge them. If they cannot name one, they take the letter; if they can, you do. Superghost lets you add letters to either end.
Twenty Questions
One player thinks of a person, place or thing. Everyone else gets twenty yes or no questions between them. Simple, but the trick is the first question: "Is it bigger than a breadbox?" has survived for a reason. Works for any size.
Word Association
Go round the circle: each player says a word linked to the last one, within three seconds. Hesitate, repeat a word, or make a link nobody accepts, and you are out. Last one in wins. A good warm up while people arrive.
Password
Two teams of two (or more pairs). One player in each pair sees a secret word. They take turns giving one word clues to their partner, who gets one guess per clue. The first pair to guess it scores, and fewer clues score more. It is the quietest team game here and one of the best for four people.
Describe it without the obvious words
One player describes a word to their team without using it or a short list of forbidden related words, against a timer. That is the idea behind Taboo; our how to play Taboo guide has full rules and homemade card ideas.
Categories (spoken)
Pick a category ("vegetables", "film directors") and go round the circle. Each player names one in five seconds, with no repeats. Fail and you are out. Use the letter of the alphabet rule (each answer starts with the next letter) for harder rounds.
Pen and paper word games for groups
Categories with a letter
Each player draws a grid with ten categories across the top: a country, a food, a job, an animal, something in a kitchen, a famous person, a brand, a film, a plant, a verb. Pick a random letter. Everyone fills the grid against a two minute timer. Score 10 for a unique answer, 5 for one someone else also wrote, 0 for blank. It is also called Name Place Animal Thing, and is the idea behind boxed games like Scattergories.
Word Grid
Write a 4 by 4 grid of random letters on a sheet everyone can see. In three minutes, each player lists as many words as they can make from touching letters, three letters or more. Cross out any word someone else also found. Longest unique list wins.
Telegrams
Pick a random ten letter word, say "BLACKSMITH". Each player writes a telegram message whose words start with those letters in order: "Bring Lemons And Cake, Kevin Says Mum Is Too Hungry." Read them out and vote for the best.
Hangman for teams
Old, but it works with a big group if you split into teams and limit each team to one guess per turn. Use a phrase rather than a word.
Word games with cards or dice
No letter tiles? Make them.
A deck of cards as a letter picker. Write A to M on the hearts and N to Z on the spades (ace to king), or just assign letters by rank and suit on a sheet. Flip a card to choose the letter for Categories or Telegrams. It is fairer than someone "randomly" picking S every round.
Dice for timers and lengths. Roll a die to set the word length for a round of Word Grid (roll plus two), or the number of seconds each player gets in spoken Categories (roll times two). Small rules like this keep a familiar game fresh.
Tips for running word games with a mixed group
Ban the dictionary argument before it starts. Agree one referee (or one free online dictionary) for disputed words, and their ruling is final.
Mix teams by confidence, not friendship. Word games punish shy players. Pair a quick talker with a careful thinker, and let teams confer.
Use letters, not lists, for fairness. A random letter levels a group better than a fixed category list, because nobody has memorised the answers.
Keep rounds short. Two minutes for written rounds, five seconds per spoken answer. Long rounds let the best speller run away with it.
Boxed word games for groups
These are the ones we would buy for a group. Player counts are what the box says; check the edition you buy.
Codenames (2 to 8+ on the box, best with 4 or more, about 15 minutes). Two teams, a 5 by 5 word grid, one clue-giver each. Still the best team word game in a box. See games like Codenames for its relatives.
Just One. Cooperative: everyone writes a one word clue for the guesser, and any duplicate clues are wiped. It makes people avoid the obvious.
Wavelength. One player clues where a target sits on a scale between opposites. It was $34.99 on the publisher's store in October 2026 (marked down from $39.99). Our Wavelength game online guide has the rules and 128 spectrum ideas.
Scrabble and Boggle. Better for 2 to 4 than a big group. Our games like Scrabble guide covers the alternatives.
Bananagrams. Everyone builds their own crossword at once from letter tiles, so it handles more players than Scrabble without waiting.
Word games to play with friends online
When the group is split between rooms or cities, online word games fix the "how do we all see the card" problem.
Daily word puzzles. Everyone solves the same puzzle and compares results in a group chat. Our Wordle with friends guide covers how to race live instead.
Board Game Arena. Runs many published word and board games in the browser, free to start.
Room-code party games. The host opens a room and shares a code, and everyone plays on their own screen, so private words stay private. A TV is optional, and on a video call nobody needs to share a screen. That is how our word games on Rondovo work: free, with no download or sign up for guests. They are our own takes on these game families, not the branded games.
Five Letters is a live five letter word race for 2 to 16. Everyone solves the same word with six guesses, and the shared board shows only colours, so nobody can copy. Solving earns 7 minus your guesses, plus 2 for the first solver.
Hush is our describe-the-word team game for 4 to 16: avoid six forbidden words while the other team watches the list and buzzes you.
Spy Grid is our team clue game on a 5 by 5 grid for 4 to 16. A handler gives one word and a number; touch the trap and you lose.
Speed Wits puts a word puzzle built out of type on everyone's screen. Type what phrase it stands for; faster correct answers score more.
Mindline has one player clue a secret point on a scale between two extremes, and everyone moves their own slider to guess. Closer guesses score more.
Wordsmith is our crossword tile game for 2 to 4, with bonus squares and a 50 point bonus for using all seven tiles.
Bookends is a two player race: one draws the first letter, the other the last, and you race to find a word that fits.
Where we are weaker: none of ours replaces a good spoken game around a fire, and our player cap is 16, so very large rooms should use spoken games or split into groups.
