Wordle With Friends: How to Play Multiplayer Wordle, Head to Head or as a Group

Five Letters on Rondovo: the shared screen during a game

To play Wordle with friends, either everyone solves the same daily New York Times puzzle and compares the shared colour grids, or you use a multiplayer Wordle game where the whole group races on one secret word at the same time. The daily puzzle is free but gives you one word a day; multiplayer and "unlimited" versions let you play as many rounds as you like, head to head or in a group. The rest of this guide covers how each works, scoring formats that make it competitive, and the starting words that genuinely help.

In short

  • The daily puzzle is a shared ritual, not a live game: one word a day, free, with past puzzles for subscribers.
  • For a real race, use a multiplayer Wordle site or a party game where everyone guesses the same word at once and scores by speed and guesses.
  • Make it fair: same word, same timer, and hide each other's letters (only colours should be visible).
  • Strong openers use five different common letters. In our own answer list, E, A and R each appear in 40% or more of words.
  • Games like Wordle with no daily limit include Quordle, Octordle and the NYT's Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee.

What is Wordle, and can you play it together?

Wordle gives you six guesses to find a hidden five-letter word. After each guess, each letter turns green (right letter, right place), yellow (in the word, wrong place) or grey (not in the word). Josh Wardle made it in 2021 and The New York Times bought it in early 2022.

The NYT version, checked on its help pages in October 2026, is a single player puzzle: one new word a day, free to play. Hard Mode forces you to use any revealed hints in later guesses. Subscribers can also play the archive of past puzzles. There is no built-in way to race a friend on the same word in real time, which is why so many multiplayer versions exist.

Ways to play Wordle with friends

1. Share your grids (the classic)

Everyone plays the daily puzzle on their own, then pastes the coloured square grid into a group chat. The grid shows how you got there without spoiling the word. It is low effort and it works across time zones, but it is not really a game against each other: nobody knows who was faster, and the scoreboard lives in people's memory.

Make it a league. Keep a running total in a shared note: your score is the number of guesses you used, and a miss counts as 7. Lowest total at the end of the week wins. Add one rule, everyone posts before midday, and the chat comes alive every morning.

2. Set a word for each other

Some sites let you choose a word and send a link, so your friend solves your word and you solve theirs. It is good for two people and for in-jokes (pick a word that means something to the group). The weakness is that a bad word, or a word with a double letter, decides the round more than skill does.

3. Race on the same word, live

This is the real multiplayer Wordle. Everyone gets the same secret word at the same moment and you see how the others are doing as you go. Free options in October 2026 include WordleCup.io (live rooms against friends or strangers), CoWordle (head to head), Kosmi's Wortle (rooms with video chat built in) and Britannica's Victordle (a one on one duel). For a group in one room, a party game that shows everyone's progress on a shared board works best (see Five Letters below).

4. Play "unlimited" rounds

Unlimited Wordle sites drop the one-a-day limit, so you can play ten words in a row. On their own they are single player, but with friends on a video call they become a fast race: all open the same site, agree on a start, first to solve shouts.

Competitive formats that keep it fair

Racing on Wordle sounds simple until two people argue about who won. These formats settle it before you start.

FormatHow it worksBest for
Fewest guessesLowest guess count wins the word; ties share itCareful solvers, any size group
SpeedFirst correct answer wins, guesses do not matterSmall groups who like pressure
Points7 minus your guesses, plus a bonus for the first solverMixing speed and skill
Best of fiveFive words, total score, one winnerA full round at a party
Hard mode onlyEvery guess must use the hints you have foundExperienced players
PairsTwo people share one board and talk it throughFamilies, mixed ages

Hide the letters. If people can see each other's guesses, the slowest player just copies the first one's greens. Only show colours, or turn your screens away.

Use a timer. Two minutes per word is generous for most groups and stops one stuck player holding everyone up.

Wordle starting words that actually help

A good first guess finds the most letters it can. The rule is simple: five different common letters.

We checked this against our own game's answer list (820 hand-picked five-letter words). E appears in 49% of them, A in 41%, R in 40%, then T, O, S, I and L between 28% and 32%. Starting words built from those letters, like STARE, AROSE, TRACE and CRANE, each light up at least one letter in 92 to 94% of answers.

ADIEU is popular but weaker than it feels. It lights up a letter about as often, but mostly vowels, and most words have only two of those. It skips R, S, T and L, the consonants you most need to place, so your second guess has more work to do.

Repeated letters matter. In our list, 225 of the 820 answers (27%) contain a repeated letter, such as SHEEP or ALLOW. Once you have three greens and nothing else fits, try a double.

Plan two guesses, not one. A second word that uses five new letters (for example STARE, then CLOUD) tests ten letters in two moves. Many good solvers find this more useful than hunting for a perfect single opener.

Computer analyses of the NYT word list, such as the much shared 3Blue1Brown video from 2022, rank words like SALET, SLATE, CRANE and TRACE near the top. Exact rankings depend on which answer list a game uses, so treat any "best word" as a strong habit, not a guarantee. (SALET is not accepted by every game, including ours.)

Games like Wordle with no daily limit

If one word a day is not enough, these are the best known alternatives:

  • Quordle solves four words at once with nine guesses. Octordle stretches it to eight words and 13 guesses; Dordle is the gentle two-word version.
  • Connections (NYT) asks you to sort 16 words into four hidden groups. Brilliant to argue over with a friend.
  • Strands and Spelling Bee (NYT) are word search and word building puzzles for a slower daily habit.
  • Waffle gives you a grid of letters to swap into place in a limited number of moves.
  • Semantle has you guess a word by meaning, guided by how close each guess is.
  • Wordle themed spin-offs exist for almost any topic, from music to football. Sites like Listdle collect them.

Five Letters: everyone races on the same word

Five Letters is Rondovo's own take on a group word race, made for playing together in a room or on a call. It is free. One person hosts and gets a four letter code, everyone joins at rondovo.com on their own screen with no account, and the whole group solves the same secret word at once, six guesses each.

The part that makes it work as a party game: the shared board (on the TV, if you use one) shows everyone's colours but never their letters. You can see that your friend has three greens after two guesses, which is great for tension, but you cannot copy them. The word and everyone's guesses appear only when the round ends.

How scoring works, straight from the game: solve the word to earn 7 minus the guesses you used, and the first solver earns 2 extra points. Fail and you score nothing that word. The host chooses 1 to 10 words (5 by default), 60 to 240 seconds per word, the word difficulty (Easy everyday words, Medium, Hard with rare letters and doubles, or Mixed) and an optional hard mode. It takes 2 to 16 players, and no TV is needed: on a video call, everyone picks "Just this screen" and plays on their own device, so nobody has to share a screen.

Where it is weaker than the NYT puzzle: there is no daily streak and no statistics history, and our word list is our own, so it will not match the day's Wordle.

For two: Bookends

Bookends is a faster word race for exactly two players. One of you draws the first letter, the other draws the last, and you both race to type a real word that starts and ends with them (B and T: BAT, BEAT, BASKET). The first valid word wins the round: 10 points, plus 1 for every letter beyond three, so a long word is worth the risk. Matches are 3, 5 or 7 rounds.

If your group likes puzzles more than spelling, Speed Wits shows a picture puzzle made of words and everyone races to type the phrase it hides. Questions people ask

Can you play Wordle with friends?

Yes. You can all play the daily NYT puzzle and share your colour grids, keep a weekly score league, or use a multiplayer Wordle game where everyone races on the same word live.

Is there a multiplayer Wordle?

Not from the NYT itself, as of October 2026. Independent sites such as WordleCup.io, CoWordle and Kosmi's Wortle offer live multiplayer, and party games like Five Letters let a whole group race on one word.

How do you play Wordle head to head?

Both players get the same word and the same timer. Agree first whether the winner is the fewest guesses or the first solve, hide your letters from each other, and play a best of five so one lucky guess does not decide it.

Can I play more than one Wordle a day?

The free NYT puzzle is one word a day; subscribers can play past puzzles from the archive. Unlimited Wordle style sites and multiplayer games have no daily limit.

What is the best Wordle starting word?

Any word with five different common letters is a strong start. STARE, AROSE, TRACE, CRANE and SLATE all do well. Avoid repeated letters in your first guess.

What are games like Wordle?

Quordle, Octordle and Dordle (several words at once), the NYT's Connections, Strands and Spelling Bee, Waffle and Semantle. For a group, a live word race like Five Letters.

Wordle, The New York Times, NYT Games, Connections, Strands, Spelling Bee, WordleCup.io, CoWordle, Kosmi, Wortle, Britannica, Victordle, Quordle, Octordle, Dordle, Waffle, Semantle, Listdle, 3Blue1Brown and Scrabble are trademarks of their owners. Rondovo is not affiliated with them.
