Games for Couples: Two Player Board Games, Card Games, 45 Question Prompts and Long Distance Ideas
By The Rondovo team · Published · Updated · 9 min read
The best games for couples are short enough to play twice and give you something to talk about. For a date night at home, try Patchwork or Jaipur (both two players, about 30 minutes). For conversation, a question game with prompts you write yourselves beats any box. For long distance couples, a free browser game on a video call works well: you each play on your own screen and talk while you play.
Below: two player board and card games, standard deck games for two, 45 original question prompts (sweet, funny and deep), and how to play together when you live apart.
In short
- Two player board games: Patchwork, Jaipur, Hive, Codenames: Duet (cooperative).
- With a deck of cards: Gin Rummy, Cribbage, Speed.
- Questions for date night: the 45 prompts below, in three moods.
- Long distance: a video call plus a browser game; Board Game Arena or room-code games like ours.
- Quick and silly: word races and five minute strategy games, best of three.
How to choose a game as a couple
Competitive or cooperative? Some couples love beating each other. Others enjoy it more on the same side. If one of you hates losing, start with a cooperative game.
Matched or mismatched skill? If one of you plays a lot more, pick games with luck in them (Jaipur, Gin Rummy) or a cooperative game, not pure strategy like Hive.
How long do you have? A 15 minute game after dinner gets played. A two hour game gets talked about and left on the shelf.
Best two player board games for couples
Player counts are from the box; times are a typical game once you both know the rules.
| Game | Players | Time | Style | Good for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Patchwork | 2 | About 30 min | Puzzle, tile laying | Calm evenings, gentle competition |
| Jaipur | 2 | About 30 min | Card trading | Couples who like a bit of luck |
| Hive | 2 | About 20 min | Abstract strategy, no board | Travel, chess fans |
| Codenames: Duet | 2 or more | About 15 min | Cooperative word clues | Couples who would rather win together |
| The Mind | 2 to 4 | About 15 min | Cooperative, silent | A strange, intense five minutes |
| 7 Wonders Duel | 2 | Medium | Civilisation card drafting | Couples who like deeper strategy |
Patchwork
Each of you builds a quilt from odd shaped patches, paying with buttons and time. The puzzle is satisfying even when you lose. It is published by Lookout Games, and a game rarely runs past half an hour.
Jaipur
You are rival traders at a market, taking and selling goods before prices drop. Camels change everything. It plays in about half an hour, and luck in the draw means a newer player can win.
Hive
Insect tiles, no board, surround your partner's queen to win. It packs into a small bag, so it travels, and there is no board to lose.
Codenames: Duet
A two player cooperative version of Codenames: you both give and receive clues, working together to find your agents before time runs out. Good for couples who argue less when they are on the same team.
The Mind
Play numbered cards in rising order without speaking. That is the whole rule, and with two it becomes oddly tense and funny.
If one of you enjoys engine building, our guide to games like Splendor has more two player options.
Card games for couples with a standard deck
A deck of cards is the cheapest date night game there is.
Gin Rummy. Ten cards each. Draw, discard, collect sets and runs, and knock when your leftover cards add up to 10 or less. Gin (no leftovers at all) earns a bonus. Rules on Pagat.
Cribbage. Needs a pegboard, rewards counting fifteens, pairs and runs. Learn it once and you can play it for years.
Speed (or Spit). Both play at once from your own piles onto two centre piles, one up or one down. It lasts two minutes and nobody keeps their dignity.
For more ideas, our card games for groups guide has rules for Rummy and Crazy Eights, which both work well with two.
Couple question games: 45 original prompts
A question game is a deck of prompts you take turns answering. No winner, just conversation. We wrote these ourselves. Shuffle the moods, skip any you like, and answer honestly. Nothing here should make either of you uncomfortable.

Games for long distance couples
Living apart changes what works. You need games where each of you can see your own cards and the shared board while you talk.
Set up a video call first. Put the call on one device (or a laptop) and the game on another, or split the screen. Hearing each other react is most of the fun.
Free browser games. Board Game Arena hosts many two player board games in a browser with no download, including some published titles. Our two player online games guide compares more.
Question games on a call. The 45 prompts above work just as well over video. Take turns reading.
Daily rituals. Play the same daily word puzzle and compare results every evening. It is a two minute way to stay in touch; our Wordle with friends guide shows how to race on the same word.
Watch and guess. Pause a film and both guess what happens next. Loser picks the next film.
Our games to play on FaceTime article has more call-friendly ideas.
Our two player games for couples
Rondovo's "For two" shelf is games that play well with just two. One of you hosts a room, the other joins with a four letter code on their own device, from the same sofa or another country. They are free, and they are our own takes on game families, not the branded games.
Bookends is a two player word race. One of you draws the first letter, the other draws the last, and you race to type a real word that fits between them. Longer words score more. A five round game takes a few minutes.
XOXO is noughts and crosses, best of three, with an Ultimate mode: nine small boards, where your move decides which board your partner plays next.
Drop Four is our four in a row game: drop discs, block, line up four. Who starts swaps every round.
Dotty is dots and boxes with a die: roll, draw that many lines, close boxes in your colour.
Wordsmith is our crossword tile game for 2 to 4, about 45 minutes, with bonus squares and a 50 point bonus for using all seven tiles.
Prism is our gem collecting engine game for 2 to 4: take chips, buy cards that make later cards cheaper, win Patrons. First to 15 prestige starts the final round.
Also good for two: Night Express (rail routes across the USA), Five Letters (race on the same five letter word) and Frostmatch (a 90 second gem race).
Where a box wins: if you are on the same sofa and want a break from screens, a physical game like Patchwork or a deck of cards is the better date.
Video games for couples
If you would rather play on a console or PC, look for games built for two people working together rather than against each other.
- It Takes Two and Split Fiction (Hazelight) are made for exactly two players in co-op, on one sofa or online, and only one of you needs to own the game thanks to a free friend pass (check the current terms on the store).
- Overcooked! 2 is chaotic kitchen co-op. It is funny for about an hour and then tests your patience, which is part of the point.
- Stardew Valley is a slow farming game you can play together for months. Good for long distance couples.
- Portal 2 has a separate two player co-op campaign of puzzles that need both of you.
These need the right hardware and usually a copy each. Board, card and browser games do not.
