Browser Games to Play With Friends: 25 Free Online Games With No Download

By The Rondovo team · Published · Updated · 14 min read

Frostmatch on Rondovo: the shared screen during a game

The best browser games to play with friends are free, open in any modern browser and join with a link or a short code, so nobody downloads anything. For drawing, play skribbl.io or Gartic Phone. For word races, try BombParty on JKLM.fun. For a board game night, Board Game Arena and Colonist have deep catalogues. For a party night where everyone plays at once, a room based site such as Rondovo works on any device. Below are 25 picks sorted by genre, with player counts, what is free and where each one falls short.

We checked the facts about other sites in October 2026, on their own pages where they publish them. Free tiers change, so treat prices as "as of October 2026".

In short

  • Games like skribbl: skribbl.io (2 to 20 players in a private room), Gartic Phone, Drawasaurus, or a drawing game you can put on a TV.
  • Word games: BombParty on JKLM.fun for fast typing, a shared five letter word race for calmer groups.
  • Board games: Board Game Arena has hundreds of titles, most free to play. Colonist is a free Catan style game.
  • Card games: playing card sandboxes, play money poker rooms, or shedding games like our own Showdown!.
  • Party games for big groups: pick a site where everyone answers on their own screen at the same time, so nobody waits for a turn.
  • On a video call: pick games that show the board on every player's own screen, so nobody has to share theirs. A second device for the call helps too.

What makes a good browser game to play with friends?

Searches for "online games with friends free no download" usually want three things: it costs nothing, it runs in a tab, and getting friends in takes under a minute. In practice the games that work best share a few traits.

  • A private room with a link or code. Public lobbies are fine for strangers. With friends you want a room only your group can see.
  • No account for guests. One person may need to sign up to host. If every guest must make an account, half the group drops out before the first round.
  • Works on any device. Some friends will be on a laptop, some on a tablet, some on whatever is in their pocket. Touch controls matter.
  • Short rounds. Five to fifteen minutes per game lets late joiners in and lets you switch games when the mood changes.

The browser is the whole point. No install means nobody's school or work laptop blocks it, nobody needs storage space, and a friend can join from a borrowed computer.

Games like skribbl

Draw and guess is the most searched kind of browser party game, and for good reason. It needs no reading speed, works across ages, and bad drawing is half the fun.

1. skribbl.io

2 to 20 players in a private room, free. One player picks a word and draws it, everyone else types guesses into a chat box, and the faster you guess the more you score. The host sets the number of rounds and the draw time, and can add a list of custom words, including a mode that uses only your words.

The custom words option is the hidden strength. Load it with in-jokes, names from your group chat or a theme for the night. Our skribbl.io word lists have ready made sets.

Where it falls short: the canvas is small on a narrow screen, and with 15 or more people a round takes a long time because only one person draws at once.

2. Gartic Phone

Free, room link, host sets the player limit. The telephone game with drawings. Everyone writes a sentence, the next person draws it, the next describes the drawing, and so on. At the end you watch every chain unfold.

It shines with 6 to 12 people because everyone plays every round. It is weaker with 3, when chains are short. If you want something similar, our list of Gartic Phone alternatives compares the options.

3. Drawasaurus

A simple free drawing room in the same spirit as skribbl.io, useful when skribbl is busy or you want a change of word list.

4. Scrawl (Rondovo)

3 to 16 players, about 15 minutes. Our own take on draw and guess. The drawing appears live on every player's screen (and on a TV, if you connect one) while everyone guesses on their own device. Correct guesses score 10, 8, 6, then 4 in the order they arrive, later ones 3, and the drawer scores 10 for each player who gets it. You can save the drawings afterwards.

The difference from skribbl.io is the setup. Scrawl works as well in one living room with a TV as on a call, where everyone picks "Just this screen" and sees the drawing on their own device. skribbl.io wins if you want your own words: Scrawl has no custom word lists.

Word games in the browser

5. BombParty on JKLM.fun

Free, private room by code, guests play under a nickname. A bomb passes round the circle with a few letters on it, such as "ent". You type a word containing those letters before it explodes. It gets loud even when everyone is typing in silence.

JKLM.fun also hosts PopSauce, a quick picture and trivia guessing game, in the same room. Start a private room and send the code.

6. Codenames Online

Two teams, free on the official site by Czech Games Edition. Enter a nickname, set up the game, and share the room link. Each team has a spymaster who gives one word clues to point teammates at their words on a 5 by 5 grid. It works best on a call, because the talking is the game. Our guide to games like Codenames covers more of this family.

7. Five Letters (Rondovo)

2 to 16 players, about 10 minutes. Everyone solves the same five letter word at the same time, six guesses each. The shared screen shows only the colours of each player's guesses, never the letters, so nobody can copy. You score 7 minus the guesses you used, and the first solver gets two extra points. It turns a quiet daily habit into a race; more in our Wordle with friends guide.

8. Speed Wits and Bookends (Rondovo)

Speed Wits shows a word picture puzzle built from type, and the quicker your correct answer, the more it is worth (2 to 16 players). Bookends is for two: one of you draws a first letter, the other a last letter, and you race to type a word that fits between them.

Party games for big groups

The problem with most browser games at 10 or more players is waiting. One draws, nineteen watch. The games below have everyone playing at the same moment, which is why they hold big groups. For party games beyond the browser, including ones you play over a call with no site at all, see our online party games guide.

9. Spy Grid (Rondovo)

4 to 16 players, about 15 minutes. Our own version of the one word clue team game. Two teams, a 5 by 5 grid, a handler on each side who privately sees which words belong to whom. The handler gives a clue and a number, teammates tap words on their own screens, and one trap word loses the game on the spot.

10. Odd One Out (Rondovo)

4 to 12 players, about 15 minutes. Everyone gets the same secret word except the odd ones out, who get a related word and do not know they are different. Type a hint each, two rounds by default, then vote. Catching the odd player earns two points each; an odd player who escapes earns three, and one who is caught can still win two by guessing the majority word. Fans of Spyfall will feel at home; see games like Spyfall.

11. Fill-In (Rondovo)

3 to 12 players. A sentence with a blank goes up, everyone types the funniest ending, and the room votes on the answers with names hidden. Each vote is a point. It is the closest free thing to a Quiplash night; our games like Jackbox guide compares it honestly with the real thing.

12. Nightfall (Rondovo)

4 to 16 players, about 20 minutes. Mafia with the moderator built in. Roles arrive privately on each screen, the night actions happen on screen, and the day is pure arguing. Our how to play Mafia guide has the full rules.

13. Jackbox Games

Jackbox is not free and not a pure browser game: the host buys a Party Pack and runs it on a computer or console, then players join at jackbox.tv in their browsers. Only the host pays. It still has the best writing in the genre, so if someone in your group owns a pack, play it.

14. Frostmatch (Rondovo)

2 to 16 players, about 3 minutes a round. A gem matching race where everyone gets the same board and the same gem sequence, so the best player really wins. Every 150 points sends ice to an opponent, rotating through the group, and frozen gems cannot move until you match beside them. Rounds last 90 seconds by default; the top two go through to a final.

It is the one we reach for when people arrive at different times: a round is short enough that latecomers join the next one.

Board games in the browser

15. Board Game Arena

Free to play, with a paid Premium tier. The biggest board game site online, with hundreds of licensed games playable in real time or turn based over days. Premium costs $5 a month or $42 a year (the annual price rose from $36 in July 2025, per BGA's own announcement). Some games can only be started by a Premium member, though free players can join those tables. Everyone needs an account.

It is the right pick when your group wants a specific published game. It is a heavier lift for a casual night, because of accounts and rules you may need to learn.

16. Colonist

Free, with a paid membership for all maps and expansions. A Catan style game of settling, trading and building that runs in a tab. You can invite friends to a private room. The base game is free, which covers most nights.

17. Isle of Tides (Rondovo)

2 to 6 players, about 60 minutes. Our own take on a hex island trading game. Roll for resources, trade at the docks or with each other, build camps for lanterns, first to ten wins. With five or six players everyone gets a short building window between turns, so the wait never drags. The Seafarers mode adds a sea with small islands, ships, gold fields and a Kraken, and draws a new map every game. More options in games like Catan.

18. Prism and Night Express (Rondovo)

Prism is a gem and card engine builder for 2 to 4 players, first to 15 prestige. Night Express is a route building train game across a map of the USA for 2 to 5 players. Both are our own takes on well known families; see games like Splendor and games like Ticket to Ride.

19. Drop Four and XOXO (Rondovo)

Quick classics for two, or for teams. Drop Four is four in a row for 2 to 8 players, played as two teams when you are more than two. XOXO is noughts and crosses with an Ultimate mode of nine boards in one.

Card games in the browser

20. Playing card sandboxes

Sites such as playingcards.io give you a virtual table with a deck you move by hand. Nothing enforces rules, so you can play any card game you know, from Hearts to house rules nobody else has heard of. The trade off is that you have to know the rules, and everyone has to play honestly.

21. Poker Now

Free, play money only, up to 10 players a table, no sign up. Poker in a browser tab, with a room link for friends. Its chips have no cash value. Real money poker is a different thing entirely and the law on it varies by country and state, so we do not cover it.

22. Showdown! (Rondovo)

2 to 10 players, about 25 minutes. Our own match the colour or number shedding game. Block, Flip, +2 and Wild +4 cards, and a Showdown! button you must press when you are down to one card before someone presses Catch!. First to 250 points wins by default. For more, see games like Uno.

23. Nine Lives (Rondovo)

2 to 10 players. Our own draw until someone explodes card game. Draw the Kaboom without a Spare Life and you are out. Nap, Pounce, Beg and Hiss! cards let you dodge, pass the danger on, or cancel each other.

Quick games to fill ten minutes

24. Mindline (Rondovo)

2 to 16 players. One player sees a secret spot on a line between two extremes, such as Freezing and Scorching, and gives a clue like "fresh pizza". Everyone slides a guess on their own screen. It is gentle, funny and tells you a lot about how your friends think.

25. Doodle Recall (Rondovo)

2 to 16 players, about 8 minutes. Everyone draws the same words against the clock, then gets their own drawings back with the words hidden and has to name them from memory. Bad artists suffer most, which is exactly why it is funny.

How to set up a browser game night with friends

  1. Pick the call first. Discord, FaceTime, Zoom or Google Meet. Free Zoom meetings stop at 40 minutes and free Google Meet group calls at 60, as of October 2026, so a long night may need a restart. Our FaceTime games guide covers calls in detail.
  2. Use two screens if you have them. Call on a laptop, game on a tablet, or the other way round. Switching apps on one small screen is the most common thing that goes wrong.
  3. One person hosts and shares the code. Paste it into the group chat, not out loud, so nobody mishears a letter.
  4. Start with something short. A 3 to 10 minute game lets everyone check their sound and controls before a long one.
  5. Have a backup. If one site is busy or someone's device will not cooperate, move to the next game on your list rather than troubleshooting for twenty minutes.

How Rondovo compares, honestly

Rondovo is one free option among several. One person hosts a room, everyone else joins on their own screen with a four letter code, and a TV is optional. Guests need no download and no account. The games are our own originals and our own takes on classic families, not the branded games they resemble.

Where we are strong: 35 games in one place, so you switch from a word game to a drawing game to a board game without sending a new link to a new site. Most party games take up to 16 players, and every player acts at the same time.

Where others are stronger: skribbl.io takes 20 players in one room. Board Game Arena has far more published board games, including the real licensed versions. JKLM.fun has nothing quite like it for typing speed. Rondovo has no built in voice or video, so you bring your own call. For the full picture of party games beyond the browser, see our party games guide.
