skribbl.io Word Lists: 600 Custom Words Ready to Paste, by Theme

Scrawl on Rondovo: the shared screen during a game

A skribbl.io custom word list is a set of words, separated by commas, that you paste into the Custom words box when you create a private room. skribbl.io needs at least 10 words, each 1 to 32 characters long, up to 20,000 characters in total. Below are 15 original lists of 40 words each, from easy words for kids to hard ideas for adults. Copy one, paste it, and tick Use custom words only if you want nothing else to come up.

Every list here is written for this page, checked so that no word is longer than 32 characters and no word appears twice in the same list. They are all family friendly, including the adults list, which is about grown-up life rather than anything explicit.

In short

  • Where to paste: skribbl.io, then Create Private Room, then the Custom words box at the bottom of the settings.
  • Rules: at least 10 words, 1 to 32 characters each, commas between words, 20,000 characters maximum (as shown in the room settings in October 2026).
  • Only your words: tick "Use custom words only". Otherwise your words are mixed into the built-in list and you will rarely see them.
  • Best themes for a first game: funny, food, animals. Save the hard list for the second game.
  • For kids: the easy list, word count set to 3, and hints on.

How to add a custom word list on skribbl.io

  1. Go to skribbl.io, pick a name and avatar, and choose Create Private Room.
  2. Set the room: up to 20 players, a language, draw time (15 to 240 seconds), 2 to 10 rounds, the number of words the drawer chooses from (1 to 5), and hints (0 to 5).
  3. Scroll to Custom words and paste a list. Commas separate words, and a "word" can be a short phrase with spaces, such as ice cream.
  4. Tick Use custom words only if you want a themed game. Leave it unticked to sprinkle your words into the normal pool.
  5. Copy the invite link and send it to your group. Press Start when everyone is in.

Why your custom words are not showing up

Without "Use custom words only", skribbl.io mixes your words into its own list, which is far bigger. With a 40 word list, most turns will still offer built-in words. Tick the box, or paste several lists together so your words are a bigger share of the pool.

15 skribbl.io word lists, ready to paste

Each list is 40 words. Combine two or three for a longer game: with 8 players, 3 rounds and 3 word choices per turn, the drawer sees 72 words, so two lists keep repeats rare.

Make your own skribbl.io word list

The lists above are a start. A list made for your group is better, because inside jokes are the most fun thing to draw.

  • Mix difficulties. About two thirds easy, one third hard. A whole list of hard words makes for a quiet game.
  • Use nouns and short actions. "Sneeze" works; "the feeling of Sunday evening" is a guess nobody will get.
  • Add names your group knows. The office dog, a holiday spot, a running joke. Keep it kind: nothing that makes fun of someone in the room.
  • Avoid words that are just letters. Brand logos and abbreviations turn into writing, which is against the spirit of the game.
  • Check for typos. A guess has to match the word, so a misspelt word only counts if someone types the same mistake.
  • Keep a master file. Save your list in a note and paste it again next time.

Skribbl for 2 people

skribbl.io lets you set a private room to 2 players. With two, you simply take turns drawing while the other guesses, so it is quieter than a big room but it works. To make it better:

  • Set word count to 1 so the drawer cannot pick the easiest word.
  • Use a short draw time (40 to 60 seconds) and play 6 or more rounds.
  • Keep a running tally on paper across several games, best of five.

Other drawing games for two include Doodle Recall, where you both draw the same words fast and then name your own scribbles from memory, and the paper games in our Gartic Phone alternatives guide.

Skribbl for kids

skribbl.io's public rooms are open to strangers, with chat and drawings that are not moderated before they appear. The site itself states that it is not responsible for user generated content. For children:

  • Always use a private room and share the invite link only with people you know.
  • Use custom words only, with the easy or animals list, so no surprising words come up.
  • Turn hints up (3 or more) and draw time to 80 seconds or longer.
  • Mute or kick anyone who joins by mistake; the room owner can do both.

Skribbl for adults

For a grown-up game night, the adults, hard and funny lists work well together. Paste all three, tick custom words only, set 2 rounds and 90 seconds. If you want something more daring, write your own list for your own group, but keep it to what everyone in the room is comfortable with.

Games like skribbl.io

skribbl.io is free and very good at what it does. If you want a change, here are the alternatives we compare in our online drawing games guide, with Rondovo's own drawing games among them.

skribbl.io2 to 20Yes, as aboveOnline with friends or strangers
Gartic PhoneLarge roomsYou write your own sentencesTelephone chains on a call
Scrawl (Rondovo)3 to 16No, built-in easy, medium and hard wordsOne room with a TV, or a call
Spindoodle (Rondovo)3 to 16No, built-in wordsA twist: the paper spins while you draw
Chain Sketch (Rondovo)4 to 12No, built-in wordsTelephone pictionary on a TV
Doodle Recall (Rondovo)2 to 16No, built-in wordsTwo players, or a quick memory game

Being honest about it: our games do not take custom word lists, so for an inside joke edition, skribbl.io is the better choice. Where ours help is the living room. In Scrawl, the drawing appears live on a TV while everyone guesses on their own screen. Correct guesses score 10, 8, 6 and then 4 points in the order they arrive, and the drawer earns 10 for each player who gets it. In Spindoodle, the round paper turns under your pen and speeds up as the clock runs down, so even a good artist ends up drawing a spiral.

If you are playing on paper instead, our list of Pictionary words is sorted by difficulty, and our party games guide has plenty more for the same night.
